The highlands of Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna: places of memory
The highlands of Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna are situated in the south-eastern part of the region Trentino, not far from Trento and Rovereto, and they are characterized by green woods and alpine pastures.
Ancient traditions and legends still live together with agriculture and pasture.
The Highlands, on the border between Austria and Italy, still keep in memory the cruel events of the First World War. The massive fortification of the highlands began at the end of 1800, when the area still constituted the southern borders of the Austrian monarchy.
The fortifications that were built in Luserna, in the area of Vezzene, Lavarone and Folgaria, represented the most advanced military engineering of the time.
